New report showed that there were about 35,000 children with at least one parent on kontanthjælp in 2022
Never before during this century have so few children had parents who are kontanthjælp unemployment benefit recipients.
A new report from the economic council of the labour movement, Arbejderbevægelsens Erhvervsråd, showed that about 35,000 children had at least one parent on kontanthjælp in 2022.
That’s half of what it was five years ago and the lowest figure in 22 years.
“When parents transition from kontanthjælp to employment, it not only increases the family’s present financial situation, but also the child’s chances of performing well in the education system and in the labour market later in life,” the report found.

Tide turning in 2023
According to the report, the trend is largely down to the significant increase in the number of people in employment in recent years.
However, the positive development doesn’t look to continue for much longer.
Many economists predict a financial downturn in 2023, which will likely lead to a spike in unemployment.
