John Terry, unceremoniously dumped by Chelsea, has been linked with a move to Brøndby. As the saying goes: one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, so could this be the start of a Danish love affair?

The Sunday Mirror certainly thinks so. It believes Terry will be offered a player-manager role to replace Thomas Frank who resigned last week after a club director, Jan Bech Andersen, posted negative comments about him on a fan forum.

The British newspaper envisages a fearsome defensive partnership with Daniel Agger, who rejoined the club in August 2014. And now Chelsea have declined to renew Terry’s contract, Brøndby certainly have an opportunity.

Could Terry bring a change in fortune?
This is not the first time Brøndby has been linked to the player. In 2014, Terry revealed he was a fan of the club and that he was on friendly terms with Andersen. This led to reports of a potential free transfer, which at the time were dismissed.

The Sunday Mirror also reported the club would be able to sign stars equal to Terry’s calibre. This would contrast with Brøndby’s financial results for 2015, which showed a loss of 17 million kroner and led to the recent departure of CEO Søren Vadmand.

The end of last season marked a decade since the club last won a domestic league title. The capture of Terry would surely go a long way to fixing this title drought. However it remains to be seen if the player would want to swap challenging for European titles for chasing the Superliga.

A man in demand
Should he leave Stanford Bridge, a bidding war for his services will take place. Former Chelsea players Frank Lampard, now playing in the MLS, and Gianfranco Zola, who is coaching in Qatar, have already admitted a strong interest in signing Terry. For Brøndby to be mentioned alongside the riches of those leagues is already impressive.

Neither Terry nor his representatives have commented on the rumours.

A survey carried out by Megafon for TV2 has found that 71 percent of parents have handed over children to daycare in spite of them being sick.

Moreover, 21 percent of those surveyed admitted to medicating their kids with paracetamol, such as Panodil, before sending them to school.

The FOLA parents’ organisation is shocked by the findings.

“I think it is absolutely crazy. It simply cannot be that a child goes to school sick and plays with lots of other children. Then we are faced with the fact that they will infect the whole institution,” said FOLA chair Signe Nielsen.

Pill pushers
At the Børnehuset daycare institution in Silkeborg a meeting was called where parents were implored not to bring their sick children to school.

At Børnehuset there are fears that parents prefer to pack their kids off with a pill without informing teachers.

“We occasionally have children who that they have had a pill for breakfast,” said headteacher Susanne Bødker. “You might think that it is a Panodil more than a vitamin pill, if it is a child who has just been sick, for example.”

Parents sick and tired
Parents, when confronted, often cite pressure at work as a reason for not being able to stay at home with their children.

Many declare that they simply cannot take another day off, as they are afraid of being fired.

Allan Randrup Thomsen, a professor of virology at KU, has heavily criticised the parents’ actions, describing the current situation as a “vicious circle”.

“It promotes the spread of viruses, and it adds momentum to a cycle where parents are pressured by high levels of sick-leave. If they then choose to send the children to daycare while they are still recovering, they keep the epidemic going in daycares, and this in turn puts a greater burden on the parents.”
