The municipality hopes to save millions and improve the comfort of nursing home residents
Hjørring Municipality in northern Jutland has proposed using chips to monitor the use of adult nappies by the elderly at nursing homes, reports DR.
The municipality wants to learn how often and when the diapers need to be changed.
To save money and time
Hjørring hopes to cut down costs related to changing the nappies and to improve the residents’ comfort by reducing soreness and skin problems if they are changed in a timely manner.
Currently, Danish municipalities spend 190 million kroner on nappies for nursing home residents every year.
Hjørring Municipality believes it will be possible to reduce the amount of time and nappies being used if carers can establish the residents’ toilet habits so they don’t have to run around changing the nappies unnecessarily.
If approved by the committee for the elderly and the handicapped, the monitoring will be rolled out at all the nursing homes in the municipality.
