FCM look like Denmark last shot at European football this season
It was looking like a long night for Danish football fans last night following Brøndby’s Greek tragedy in the Europa League final qualifying round.
The Boys from Vestegnen were thrashed by their Greek hosts PAOK Saloniki 5-0 and actually fortunate to escape back to Copenhagen with the score so low.
So as FC Midtjylland kicked off at St Mary’s against Southampton moments after the final whistle in Greece, fears of a similar demise swept through the ranks of most Danish football fans.

But the fears abated as it quickly became clear that FCM were not about to collapse on the English coast. performing well enough to take a 1-1 result back to Jutland. FCM’s goal was even scored by Tim Sparv, who played for Southampton from 2003-2006.
It was a most critical result for Danish football and, with Brøndby needing a miracle in the second leg, the country’s coefficient point hopes are hinging on FCM getting past the Saints at home in Herning on August 27.
If they don’t, there will be no Danish teams left in the European football competitions the year. And that would spell disaster for Denmark’s already floundering position in European football.
