Wimbledon draw opening up as Wozniacki advances to last 16

German nemesis Angelique Kerber eliminated
The draw is opening up nicely for Caroline Wozniacki at Wimbledon where she moved effortlessly to the fourth round today, dispatching Italy’s Camila Giorgi 6-2, 6-2 with ease – a player who had previously held a 2-1 superiority over the Dane.
Wozniacki had been expecting to face Angelique Kerber in the last 16, but the German number 10 seed had just moments earlier been knocked out by Spain’s Garbine Muguruza in a titanic struggle that included a 26-point tie-break.
The length of that match bodes well for Wozniacki, although Muguruza does hold a 2-1 head-to-head superiority, including a win in the third round of last year’s Australian Open.
Kerber had been the second favourite to make the final from the bottom half of the draw, so it is perhaps understandable that Wozniacki has been shortened by bookmakers from 40/1 to 25/1. She is now sixth favourite to win.
Weather permitting, Wozniacki will face Muguruza on Monday.
UPDATE: Defending champion Petra Kvitova has also been eliminated today, leaving Wozniacki and Agnieszka Radwanska as the favourites to make the final from their side of the draw. Wozniacki is now 16/1 to win the tournament.
