This year, the start of the summer school break falls on June 27 with the holidays lasting until August 9.
Six weeks of free time can be more than some can handle, so if you are struggling for an ideas, here are a few tips for you and, perhaps more importantly, your kids. But first, let’s celebrate the summer solstice, better known in these fair shores as Sankt Hans Aften.
Midsummer in Tivoli
Come to Tivoli on June 23 and see the Midsummer bonfire being lit at the Tivoli Lake while a boy choir from Copenhagen sing the traditional ‘Midsommervisen’ song. The programme starts at 17:00 and ends at 22:45 with a breathtaking lightshow.
Learning for adults
Get inspired by the experiences of some Danish folk high school students at this year’s Folkemødet. Check the site Danishfolkhighschools.com and sign up for a short summer course. In a very informal way, learn how to cook, sing, meditate, play an instrument and much more.
Kids who love to learn
The Copenhagen International School in Hellerup offers summer programs for children aged 4-15. Activities included in the holiday curriculum range from street art, creative writing and forensic science to Irish dance and sailing. All courses are held in English.
