Dane to take over in September
Mogens Lykketoft has announced that his theme for his year-long presidency of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly will be: ‘The UN at 70, a new commitment to action’.
Urging world leaders “to strive to build a more fair and stable world”, he reminded media that “the 92 wealthiest dollar-billionaires own more than the poorest half of humanity”.
Lykketoft was confirmed as president of the 70th anniversary session back in November, and yesterday, the current president, Sam Kutesa of Uganda, officially announced his election by acclamation.
Lykketoft, 69, the speaker of parliament since 2011 who is a former minister, said that his top priorities will be to ensure world leaders work to eradicate poverty, address climate change and promote economic growth.

Largely ceremonial
Lykketoft is known as a skilled negotiator and a shrewd politician.
He was criticised last year for meeting Palestinian officials during a visit to the region but not Israeli officials. Lykketoft said that he didn’t meet with the Israelis because of scheduling conflicts.
The job of UN president is largely ceremonial and rotates annually by region. Lykketoft was the unanimous choice of European and other Western nations.
Lykketoft will start his year-long presidency in September. He is the first Dane to hold the position.
