Nordea ordered to pay victim 10,000 kroner in compensation
A Nordea bank adviser discriminated against and harassed a refugee man when he dared to ask for a loan in English.
According to the Board for Equal Treatment, the adviser's behavior violated the law against ethnic discrimination and the bank has been ordered to pay 10,000 kroner in compensation.
Racist remarks
The man, who moved to Denmark in 2009 as a refugee, has stated that he was exposed to very harsh, racist treatment when he approached Nordea regarding a loan.
According to the victim's words, the bank adviser said "Learn Danish or get back to your home country" when he asked if they could speak English during a meeting.
A regrettable incident
Nordea's HR manager, Niels Gregers Hansen, described the case as unfortunate and regrettable.
"We have many employees who speak English, so it is possible to talk to us even if Danish is not your native language," Hansen told Metroxpress.
Nordea provides online banking services in five languages: Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, Swedish and … English.
