Former Danish MP released from US prison
This article is more than 10 years old.
Uwe Jensen spent last 14 years incarcerated on multiple charges
Now 78-years-old, Uwe Jensen is a free man after being the subject of what was categorized as one of the ten largest cases of terrorism in the US after the September 11 attacks, reports Ekstra Bladet.
Jensen spent the last 12 years and two months in a prison in Houston, Texas and hopes that he can now return to Denmark, though he renounced his Danish citizenship in 1990 to become a US citizen.
“I hope I can be transferred to Denmark,” Jensen tells Ekstra Bladet. “I want to spend my last years in Denmark, for this [the US] is not the land of freedom. It is a police state.”
Sting victim
Jensen was arrested at his home in Houston, Texas in 2002 by the FBI as part of a sting operation for his involvement in a large weapons and drugs trade deal worth just under 200 million kroner.
The deal involved smuggling four weapons containers to the AUC, a paramilitary terrorist organisation in Colombia, in exchange for cocaine. The containers were filled with 300,000 grenades, 300 guns, 9,000 AK-47 rifles and millions of rounds of ammunition.
An undercover agent whom Jensen thought was a friend exposed Jensen after following him and his business colleagues for 13 months.
A confusing future
Jensen worries about his old age and said he should look for a place to stay near public transport and a supermarket and should look for a part-time job, though he said no one would hire him at his age.
“I lost everything. My house. Everything,” he told Ekstra Bladet. “I do not know what to do. It is confusing.”
The former MP and EC parliament representative will spend the next five years on parole. He was released last Friday morning.
