Police charge doctors with spending research grants on televisions, paintings and parties
Five doctors from Rigshospitalet have been charged with fraud. According to Jyllands-Posten, the five cardiologists have been charged with fraud, embezzlement and theft amounting to some 6.5 million kroner.
The doctors are suspected of using funds from research grants for private purposes.
TVs, birthdays and paintings
One doctor is thought to have spent 3 million kroner on items like furniture and televisions. Nearly 40,000 kroner went on throwing a birthday party for his daughter.
Another of the doctors is charged with using over 27,000 kroner to buy paintings under the pretext that the artwork was for the hospital. But the paintings have apparently never graced the walls of Rigshospitalet.

Another doctor's charges related to fraud of around 3 million kroner. Police declined to give specifics on how that money was used. All five said they were not guilty.
The National Audit Office is now investigating how research funds are managed in Denmark.
