Former football official acknowledged for his exceptional services
The former top Danish football referee, Peter Mikkelsen, was awarded the FIFA Special Referee Award on Wednesday.
The award is given to referees who judged at the highest level in their home country for at least ten years and refereed over at least 20 top-level international matches.
"I felt both surprised, proud and very touched," said Mikkelsen in a press release.
"It is a great prize to get, and it was great when my peers stood up in the room and applauded me."
Refereed five World Cups
Peter Mikkelsen refereed five matches at the World Cup: two in 1990 and three in 1994.
He ended his active career in 1998 and is now involved with the FIFA's Referee Committee.
Henning Lund Sørensen, another former top Danish referee, received the award in 2009.
