Mysterious nautical activity continues around Stockholm archipelago
As Sweden continues its search since Friday off a tip that there was “unusual underwater activity” in Kanholmsfjorn, a fjord in the Stockholm archipelago, a Russian-owned oil tanker, the NS Concord, headed for Denmark, has been zigzagging off the Swedish coast as well, Jyllands-Posten reports.
Several Swedish newspapers have speculated that the tanker is serving as a supply ship to a damaged submarine below. The NS Concord is a merchant ship flying the Liberian flag.
Swedish authorities mum
There is still no comment from authorities on the speculations that the submarine stranded in the bay is Russian, reports Berlingske.
However, Swedish newspaper, Svenska Dagbladet, reports through a credible source in the Swedish Defence Ministry that they knew about the activity and had intercepted communication on Thursday evening on a special radio frequency used only by Russian vessels in emergency situations.
The Russian Defence Ministry has reported they have no emergencies with Russian military vessels in the area.
