The Danish Superliga champions FC Copenhagen has sacked the club's long-time sporting director, Carsten V Jensen, in the wake of a poor season.
The club’s coach, Ståle Solbakken, will take on the sporting duties on top of his coaching position, while Johan Lange has been named as the club’s technical director.
Jensen, 51, has been at the club for decades, first as a player and then as the assistant coach under coaches Roy Hodgson and Hans Backe from 2000-2005. He became the club’s sporting director in 2006 and was the temporary head coach for a period in 2012.
Nielsen finally gets big-time fight
The undefeated 23-year-old boxer Patrick Nielsen has finally been handed a big-time fight after agreeing to take on a similarly undefeated opponent, Russia's Dmitry Chudinov, in Moscow on June 1 for the interim WBA World Championship. The young gun from Albertslund has 22 wins (eleven knockouts) to his name, while his 27-year-old opponent has 12 wins (eight knockouts).
Hansen comes close in Singapore
Anders Hansen’s hope to win his first Europa Tour golf tournament victory in five years was dashed on the final round thanks to a final-hole eagle by Felipe Aguilar of Chile who finished one shot ahead. The Dane shot a 67 on the final day but bogeyed the16th to end up 21 under par and tied for second with US golfer David Lipsky.
Legendary swimming coach passes away
The former coach of the Danish national swimming team, Paulus Wildeboer, has passed away after a long fight against prostate cancer. The Dutchman took over coaching the Danish swimmers after the 2008 Beijing Olympics and helped the Danes win 64 medals during his five-year stint before moving on to coach the Australian swimming team.
Magnussen Sr wins in the US
Jan Magnussen won the two-hour Tudor United SportsCar Championship in Monterey, California for the second time in a row over the weekend with his Spanish co-driver Antonio Garcia. The win propels the pair up to second place on the overall rankings of the GT Le Mans-series of the Tudor United SportsCar Championship
Poulsen to leave Ajax
Christian Poulsen will not be extending his contract with Ajax, the Dutch club has revealed on its website. The 34-year-old veteran, who has just won a second championship with the club, said he wouldn’t sign a contract that would risk him spending a lot of time on the bench. Poulsen has played for the Dutch club since 2012 after a failed spell with Liverpool.
