New DBU head Claus Bretton-Meyer wants to make innovative changes
DBU sack communications head
The Danish football association, DBU, last week fired its long-standing head of communications, Lars Berendt, after 22 years of service. The news comes just a week after Claus Bretton-Meyer took over as the head of DBU, replacig Jim Stjerne Hansen on March 1. Berendt, who has for years been criticised by the Danish media, was replaced because of a new DBU strategy to think more innovatively. Deputy communications head, Jacob Wadland, will take over as interim head of communications while DBU searches for a replacement.
An all-Danish fiasco
The All England badminton tournament turned into a nightmare for the Danish badminton players in Birmingham after they were all ousted before the semi-finals. Youngster Hans-Kristian Vittinghus lost admirably to the Chinese favourite Chen Long 21-15, 11-21, 14-21 in the men’s singles quarter-finals, before Kamilla Rytter Juhl and Mads Pieler Kolding ended Danish participation by losing 15-21, 21-19, 13-21 in the mixed doubles quarters.
Arnesen waves ‘dasvidaniya’ to Ukraine
Frank Arnesen has quit as sporting director of the Ukrainian club Metalist Kharkiv just a month after taking over the position. Arnesen said that he felt pressured to leave the club due to the political situation in the country. Wealthy club owner Sergei Kurchenko has reportedly had to flee Ukraine because of his connections to the country’s deposed former president Viktor Yanukovych.
Wozniacki eyeing final repeat
Caroline Wozniacki has battled her way to the fourth round at the prestigious Indian Wells tournament after overcoming the world number 64, Yaroslava Shvedova, of Kazakhstan, 7-6 (9-7), 3-6, 6-1. The tenth-seeded Dane survived six set points in the first set as she booked a fourth-round match-up with the former world number one, the Serbian seventh seed Jelena Jankovic. Wozniacki might fancy her chances. She finished runner-up at Indian Wells in 2013 and won the tournament in 2011.
Jensen back on Canuck ice
Danish ice hockey starlet Nicklas Jensen made his seasonal NHL debut for the Vancouver Canucks after being called up from the Utica Comets over the weekend. The 21-year-old Dane – selected 29th overall in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft – got the nod from head coach John Tortorella after forward Zach Kassian was handed a three-match ban.
KH ladies fall short of EHF semis
København Håndbold’s ladies are out of the EHF European Cup in handball after running into some stern Russian competition in the quarter-finals. After losing the away leg to Lada Togliatti, KH lost at home as well to end their hopes of reaching the semis in the club's first year of existence. Team Esbjerg made the semi-finals after beating Dinamo Volgograd by three goals on aggregate.
