Saxo Bank, fresh from losing its status as the main sponsor of a UCI World Tour cycling team to Tinkoff, has announced a deal to sponsor the Lotus team in Formula One.
Prior to the deal, the team’s 2014 F1 status had been “subject to confirmation” and its total debt estimated at around a billion kroner.
Meanwhile, Denmark’s Marco Sørensen, 23, has been tipped to become the team’s new reserve driver to replace Davide Valsecchi, who was said to be “angry” at being overlooked as the replacement of Kimi Raikkonen following the Finn’s departure to Ferrari.
The deal could one day lead to Sørensen resuming his rivalry with Formula Renault 3.5 series champion Kevin Magnussen, who he finished six places behind last year. Magnussen, it was confirmed in November, will this season drive for McLaren.
