Thomas Bjørn claimed his second title of the season with victory in the Nedbank Golf Challenge in South Africa on Sunday. The 42-year-old shot two eagles on the back nine for a 65 to come from behind to finish two ahead of Sergio Garcia and overnight leader Jamie Donaldson on -20. The victory is Bjørn’s 15th on the European Tour, and as of Wednesday he is number 25 in the world rankings.
Hand it to the ladies
At the time of going to press, the women’s national team needed to beat the hosts Serbia on Wednesday and Brazil on Friday to be confident of an easy draw in the last 16 of the ongoing World Women’s Handball Championship. As expected, the Danes comfortably beat China, Japan and Algeria in their opening three games. Should they win the group, they will not be in the same half as favourites Norway.
Bendtner ends barren run
Nicklas Bendtner surprised the footballing world last week by finally finding the net for Arsenal. The 25-year-old’s header in just the second minute against Hull City last week on Wednesday was his first strike since March 2011. Football pundit Gary Lineker summed up the mood in Britain when he tweeted: “Some of the great Premier League strikers scoring tonight. Suarez, Aguero … Bendtner.”
Not baddi ladies
The national women’s team are one game away from the final of the Kabaddi World Cup after qualifying for the semi-finals unbeaten. Wins against Pakistan, England and Mexico earned them a last four game against New Zealand on Wednesday. Should the 2012 bronze medallists win, they will probably meet India, the mighty hosts, in Sunday’s final. The men, meanwhile, failed to win a game.
Last roll for Jimmy
Former AaB keeper Jimmy Nielsen, 36, retired on a high by winning the MLS Cup with his side Sporting Kansas City on Saturday. They beat Real Salt Lake 7-6 in a penalty shootout that saw him make two vital saves. Nielsen won the Danish Goalkeeper of the Year award twice, but failed to win a single senior cap – possibly due to a trip to a casino in 1999 while on under-21s duty that earned him the nickname ‘Casino Jimmy’.
Juniors succeed, seniors fail
FC Copenhagen were knocked out of Europe on Tuesday night, losing 0-2 at home to Real Madrid. The other game in the group, Juventus away at Galatasary, who were tied with FCK on four points with a superior head-to-head record, was postponed, but its result will not affect FCK. Meanwhile, FC Copenhagen’s under-19s have advanced to the last 16 of the inaugural 2013–14 UEFA Youth League thanks to a 3-2 defeat of Real Madrid.
