Island nation agrees to try nine suspects captured by the Esbern Snare
Nine suspected pirates detained by Danish naval forces last month were transferred to Seychelles over the weekend to face prosecution, the Defence Ministry announced.
The pirates were detained by the naval vessel Esbern Snare after attacking the ship Torm Kansas, which was sailing under a Danish flag, and a Chinese merchant ship in the Horn of Africa.
“With the transfer of the nine suspected pirates to Seychelles, we have shown once again that Danish and international efforts in the Horn of Africa are working and are making a real difference,” the defence minister, Nicolai Wammen (S), said.
The Seychelles minister of Transport, Joël Morgan, said the impending prosecution of the suspects is a small but important victory in the global fight against piracy.
“The international community should pay attention to what has been achieved in the fight against piracy but should not underestimate the threats still posed by Somali pirates,” Morgan said.
This marks the third time that Seychelles has agreed to accept suspected pirates captured by Denmark.
