Danish cyclist Michael Mørkøv won the sixth stage of the Vuelta a Espana last week on Thursday. The Saxo-Tinkoff cyclist finished ahead of the tour’s established sprinters on the 177.3km stage to take his first ever stage win in a major tour. Meanwhile, Saxo-Tinkoff currently has two riders in the Top-10 of the standings: Nicholas Roche, who is third, and Rafal Majka, who is ninth. The tour ends on September 15.

Canoeing for silver – again

René Holten Poulsen from the Maribo Kayak Club won a silver medal in the K1 500-metre race at the 2013 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships in Germany last weekend, missing out on gold by over a second to his German counterpart, Tom Liebscher the 24-year-old, who won silver at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, was his country’s lone medallist at the championships.

Rowing to gold – twice

The Danes showed their mettle in the lightweight classification at the World Rowing Championships over the weekend, winning gold medals in both the lightweight men’s single sculls and the lightweight men’s four. Denmark had entered seven boats into the championships held in South Korea.  The Danish single sculler, Henrik Stephansen, had been considered a favourite in his event based on his 2,000-metre indoor rowing record.

Giants coming to Parken

FC Copenhagen might be near the bottom of the table in the Superliga, but Parken stadium will see some of the best clubs in the world visit for the group stage of the Champions League. Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid are 4/9 favourites to win the group (all prices Ladbroke’s), followed by Italian champions Juventus (7/4) and Turkey’s Galatasaray (16s), leaving FCK the rank outsiders at 80/1.

Esbjerg earns Europa spot

Esbjerg booked its spot in the Europa League’s group stage, where it will play Belgium’s Standard Liège, Austria’s Salzburg and Sweden’s Elfsborg. It’s the first Europa League berth for the west Jutland club, which advanced following an impressive win over French club St Etienne, which it beat 5-3 on aggregate thanks to a 1-0 win in France last week on Thursday. Esbjerg is currently fourth in the Superliga.

Brøndby still bottom

While FC Copenhagen picked up its first win of the season, more disappointment continued for city rival Brøndby, which conceded two late goals to AaB BK in a 2-1 loss at the Nordjyske Arena. Bottom-of-the-table Brøndby had gone ahead in the 72nd minute thanks to a goal by Simon Christoffersen, only to see AaB score twice within the space of three minutes when victory had been there for the taking.

A survey carried out by Megafon for TV2 has found that 71 percent of parents have handed over children to daycare in spite of them being sick.

Moreover, 21 percent of those surveyed admitted to medicating their kids with paracetamol, such as Panodil, before sending them to school.

The FOLA parents’ organisation is shocked by the findings.

“I think it is absolutely crazy. It simply cannot be that a child goes to school sick and plays with lots of other children. Then we are faced with the fact that they will infect the whole institution,” said FOLA chair Signe Nielsen.

Pill pushers
At the Børnehuset daycare institution in Silkeborg a meeting was called where parents were implored not to bring their sick children to school.

At Børnehuset there are fears that parents prefer to pack their kids off with a pill without informing teachers.

“We occasionally have children who that they have had a pill for breakfast,” said headteacher Susanne Bødker. “You might think that it is a Panodil more than a vitamin pill, if it is a child who has just been sick, for example.”

Parents sick and tired
Parents, when confronted, often cite pressure at work as a reason for not being able to stay at home with their children.

Many declare that they simply cannot take another day off, as they are afraid of being fired.

Allan Randrup Thomsen, a professor of virology at KU, has heavily criticised the parents’ actions, describing the current situation as a “vicious circle”.

“It promotes the spread of viruses, and it adds momentum to a cycle where parents are pressured by high levels of sick-leave. If they then choose to send the children to daycare while they are still recovering, they keep the epidemic going in daycares, and this in turn puts a greater burden on the parents.”
