Aalborg are the champions
Aalborg Håndbold were crowned national handball champions last Sunday following a 29-26 win over KIF Kolding. Aalborg had all but ensured the title before the game, following a secure 29-21 win in the first game of the two-leg final. The championship victory is the second title for Aalborg. Coincidentally, the club won their first championship, in 2010, against
KIF Kolding.
Hamburger release Arnesen
Danish football legend Frank Arnesen has been fired as sporting director of Bundesliga club Hamburger SV. The club cited “a difference in opinions concerning the long-term direction of the club” as the reason for his departure. Hamburger SV had a disappointing season and missed out on a spot in European tournaments. Arnesen came to the club in 2011 from Premier League club Chelsea, where he held a similar position.
Danish 3.5 success in Monaco
Lotus driver Marco Sørensen finished second in the Formula Renault 3.5 series during last Sunday’s Monaco Grand Prix. Sørensen’s finish behind Swiss driver Nico Muller was the Dane’s best of the season and improved him to eleventh overall in the FR series standings. Fellow Dane Kevin Magnussen is currently at the top of the series leader board, despite a fourth place finish
in Monaco.
Europe too rich for Randers
Randers HK’s women’s handball team have decided that the club’s financial situation will prevent them from participating in next season’s European competition, the EHF Cup, despite having qualified. “Our experience has been that it is simply too expensive to compete in the EHF Cup,” said director Henrik Mortensen in statement. “It is really only during the finals that the media becomes interested in the tournament.”
Krohn-Dehli keeps Celta alive
Former Brøndby midfielder Michael Krohn-Dehli, who had already been playing well for his Spanish Primera Division club Celta de Vigo, had a vital assist in their much needed La Liga win last Sunday. With the 2-0 win over Valladolid, Celta de Vigo are currently one point from safety heading into their final match of the season at home against Espanyol on Sunday.
Badminton bronze
The Danish national badminton team finished a joint third in the world mix team championship, the Sudirman Cup, last Saturday. The Danes lost to eventual gold medallists China in the semi-finals by a margin of 3-1. Men’s doubles pair Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen were the only Danes to record a win over their Chinese opponents. Denmark has now recorded nine bronzes in the competition.
