SønderjyskE hunt Hawks
The Danish Ice Hockey Championship final between the Frederikshavn White Hawks and SønderjyskE is heading for a nerve-shattering decider following SønderjyskE’s 5-2 win in game six. SønderjyskE lifted the trophy back in 2010, while the White Hawks, who lost last year’s final to the Herning Blue Fox, have not taken gold since 2000. The game will be played on Friday April 21 in Frederikshavn.
Bayern's babe
Danish attacking midfielder Pierre-Emile Højberg became Bayern Munich’s youngest ever debutant last Saturday. He replaced Switzerland’s Xherdan Shaqiri with 20 minutes to go in the recently-crowned Bundesliga champions’ 4-0 win at home to Nürnberg. At 17 years and 251 days, he beats out David Alaba’s old record by a full week. Højberg recently stated his preference to play for the Danish national team.
Poker stars fold
The Danish poker national team finished a disappointing eighth at the European Nations Cup in Cyprus this week, narrowly missing out on a spot in the International Federation of Poker World Championship, which is set to take place in November. Denmark finished just six points outside the qualification places. This was the first time the cup had been held, with Ireland taking the inaugural win.
Danes Czech in
Cycling team Saxo-Tinkoff delivered a surprise victory at the Amstel Gold Race in the Netherlands last weekend where Czech rider Roman Kreuziger crossed the line first. The one-day race is part of the UCI World Tour and has been held annually since 1968. This was the team’s first win of the year. The team’s general manager Bjarne Riis won the race in 1997 and is to date the event’s only Danish winner.
Gold in Silverstone
Le Mans super-racer Tom Kristensen and his team Audi Sport Team Joest took gold at the six-hour Silverstone race, the opening part of the FIA World Endurance Championship. The win is a good sign for the Dane who will hope to take his Le Mans record to nine wins this June. Team Joest also holds the all-time team record of 12 wins in the race. Kristensen last won in 2008.
Leaping up the list
The men’s national football team were among the biggest movers in the recently updated FIFA World Rankings. Following their 3-0 win over the Czech Republic and the 1-1 draw with Bulgaria, the team moves five spots up to number 20, overtaking rivals Sweden in the process, some 18 spots higher than the lowest they have been since the rankings began in 1993. Spain occupies the top spot on the list.
