The crafty veteran excelled in the hot and windless conditions, scoring five birdies and three bogeys en route to a two-under-par 70, which sees him sit in joint 25th place.
Anders Hansen, meanwhile, holed four birdies and four bogeys, shooting an even par 72, which leaves him in a tie for 45th.
Rising star Thorbjørn Olesen couldn’t repeat his stellar performance at the British Open as four bogeys on the first nine and only one birdie on the day, left him with a three-over-par 75, good enough for 106th place in the standings. He’ll have to up his game considerably if he is to make the cut for the final two rounds.
Carl Pettersson of Sweden leads with a six-under 66, closely followed by a large group of big names that includes Tiger Woods on 69 and Rory McIlroy on 67 . But perhaps the biggest surprise of the first day was eccentric John Daly getting into the mix with a 68.
