Rowers win country’s first Olympic title of 2012
Just moments ago, Danish rowers Mads Rasmussen and Rasmus Quist won Denmark’s first gold medal of the 2012 London Olympics.
They overhauled Britain's Zac Purchase and Mark Hunter in the final 500 metres to win the lightweight men's double scull gold.
The 2008 bronze medallists trailed by a second at the 1,500-metre mark, but finished fastest to finish ahead of the defending Olympic champions.
It was a dramatic end to a race that had started somewhat controversially the British pair successfully called for a restart after their equipment malfunctioned in the first 100 metres.
And then in the following race, Fie Udby Erichsen took silver in the women's sculls.
The medals took Denmark’s overall medal tally to five, propelling it up to 21st in the overall standings, and to 4th in the rowing medal table.
The medals mean that Denmark has already equalled its 2008 tally of seven as Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen won their semi this morning to guarantee a gold or silver medal in the badminton men’s doubles final tomorrow, and sailor Jonas Høgh-Christensen is also guaranteed a medal in the Finn.
