Denmark edges closer to Olympic qualification after making it to last four of European Handball Championships
Against all the odds, Denmark has qualified for the semi-finals of the European Handball Championships in Belgrade.
The Danes were almost written off as contenders after barely scraping through to the second group stage.
And heading into Wednesday’s games, qualification looked unlikely, with Denmark needing Poland to beat Germany in the early game ahead of its own must-win showdown against Sweden.
Poland had nothing to play for but pride, which made its one-point victory all the sweeter for Denmark, who duly thrashed Sweden 31-24 to seal its place.
Denmark will meet Spain on Friday afternoon, with the winner meeting the victor of the other semi-final (on Friday evening between Croatia and Serbia) in the final on Sunday afternoon.
The winner of the tournament automatically qualifies for the Olympics in London this summer. Should Denmark fail to win, its Olympic fate will rest in its performance at an Olympic qualifying tournament in Denmark in April.
